Keep it Local for Father’s Day

It’s Father’s Day on June 18th. Dad may say he doesn’t want you to go to too much trouble, but you know he’d probably appreciate a little Father’s Day recognition, and if you shop local, you’ll be honoring his desire to keep things simple. Novato has plenty of convenient ways to grab Dad a gift, and no shortage of places to take him for a celebratory pint or a bite to eat.

If you’re the “get Dad a tie” type, note that Novato now has our own Nordstrom Rack at Vintage Oaks. If you want to pick up something smart that won’t break the bank (or just check out the new addition to Vintage Oaks), you have the perfect excuse.

If Dad’s more of a book lover, head down to Copperfield’s Books, with 6,000 square feet of books you can browse the old fashioned way. This is the perfect location to pick out a book that tells Dad you know what he likes and you’re happy to help him spend time soaking up his favorite subject matter. Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman is on this Dad’s “to read” list…

If Dad likes pottering around the garden, you’re pretty much spoiled for choice in Novato. Armstrong Garden Center and Sloat Garden Center have plenty of gift ideas for green fingered fellows, while Pini Ace Hardware is packed with practical gifts for the Dad who likes to keep a well-stocked tool shed.

Because gardening can be thirsty work, you might also consider a trip to BeerCraft in Downtown Novato, boasting almost as many bottled beers as Copperfield’s has books. Catering to the craft-ale aficionado, this is the perfect place to pick up some hard-to-find bottled beer for the kind of gift-basket any beer-loving Dad would love. Or bring Dad along and let him sample some of craft beers on tap.

Other beer-centric options include a trip to Bicycle Brüstop on Grant, which combines the unusual combination of mountain-bike gear and a small bar featuring local brews. Or pick up a growler of locally-brewed beer from Moylan’s Brewery & Restaurant.

If Dad’s more of a wine lover, Novato still has you covered, with Trek Winery tucked away just one block from Grant Avenue, offering award winning wines and olive oils. You can even sign Dad up for their Wine Club and he’ll enjoy quarterly shipments of Trek wines, including some not yet available to the public.

There are, of course, more ways to celebrate Father’s Day than with beer and wine. Just a few local options include a delicious cheese plate. The cheesemongers at Whole Foods will be happy to help you make some quality selections. Or for spinning vinyl platters, check out the selection of albums on offer at Watts Music on Grant Ave. If Dad still has a turntable, here’s your chance to give him something new (or classic) to play on it.

For the sporty Dad, consider a team jersey from All Seasons Soccer. Summer is a great time to wear your soccer colors, and if Dad has a team he supports, here’s your chance to kit him out in a classy soccer kit. If Dad’s more likely to be cycling around Marin, a visit to Old Town Sports is one way to support his biking hobby.

Other Dad-friendly eating options include the Father’s Day steak and chops dinner special at Hilltop 1892, one of Novato’s most iconic eateries.

However you decide to show your appreciation this Father’s Day, be sure to Shop Local. Dad would approve.
