Stay Local This March, with Art, Music and More in Novato

Looking for something fun to do in the month of March? Novato has plenty of opportunities to enjoy the arts and get creative, whether you’re a music lover, a would-be artist or a fan of the written word.

The Marin MOCA has a new exhibition by the late Bay Area artist Viola Frey, who passed 15 years ago. Entitled “Her Self”, the exhibition focuses on her self-portraits in multiple mediums, including oil and ceramics, with work spanning over four decades of her career. The exhibition opens on Saturday March 2nd and runs through April 21st.

For plant lovers in Novato, Trek Winery is hosting a Plant Night on Thursday March 7th, where you’re invited to “dig, drink and be merry” as you craft an Easter planter. Instruction is provided by an expert host, so no experience is required, and everything you need is supplied. Learn more about the event here.

Live music is always happening around Novato. Upcoming gigs in March include Restless Natives at Mantra Wines on the 9th and BBQ and Blues with Charles Wheal on the 30th. Check listings for these and other events at this chic Grant Avenue destination.

Elsewhere at the HopMonk Tavern you can trade fine wine for fantastic brews, with a slate of live gigs during the month that includes a tribute to the Eagles with the Illeagals on March 30th, a visit from Petty Theft for a night of Tom Petty sounds on March 15th, and a raucous St. Patrick’s Day party on the 17th featuring Tim Flannery & the Lunatic Fringe. Check out these and other March dates at the HopMonk online.

Finally, at the end of the Month, Copperfields Books presents Words off Paper, a local author panel hosted by Betsy Graziani Fasbinder. Authors presenting include: Shira Marin, author of Shadows of a Broken Mystery; Michelle A. Carter, author of From Under the Russian Snow; Gail Entrekin, Poet and Author of Rearrangement of the Invisible; and Judy Crowe, Poet and Author of Flat Water: Nebraska Poems. Learn more about that event here.
