Novato gardeners gained a new resource in a familiar location this summer, with the arrival of SummerWinds Nursery, located at 1430 South Novato Blvd., the former home of the Armstrong Garden Center.
The new Novato SummerWinds Nursery is the latest addition to the SummerWinds family, joining stores in Silicon Valley locations like Cupertino and Palo Alto, and a few further afield in Arizona.
Shoppers can find an extensive line of herbs, a full line of edibles, low water use plants – perfect for re-landscaping during the drought, California natives, pollinator plants, annuals and perennials sourced from established Armstrong growers, and locally grown plants from growers in Gilroy and Morgan Hill.
You may also see some familiar faces, as SummerWinds retained Armstrong employees like manager Linda Leathers and assistant manager Christine Bikle, who offer expert perspectives on local gardening challenges and opportunities.
The store features a variety of garden décor and accessories as well a good choice of containers, including distinctive pottery from Pacific Home and Garden in Oakland.
In a boon for organic gardeners, SummerWinds Nursery also has an entire line of E.B. Stone products such as Recipe 420 Original Potting Soil, SummerWinds Natural and Organic Potting Soil, and SummerWinds Natural and Organic Planting Mix.
Other services offered include a rewards program, garden coaching, landscape design expertise, free online advice on plants and garden ideas, a free email newsletter, and fall and spring seminars.
There is also a 10% discount for veterans and active-duty service members and 15% discounts on Wednesdays for people 60 years and older. There are restrictions, so it’s best to check before purchasing.
