Support Our Local Bookstores on International Literacy Day

Maybe it’s all this time spent at home, but we’ve been hearing book recommendations left and right as well as stories about Novato residents joining virtual book clubs. Reading is one of the most timeless, simple pleasures, and it’s a wonderful activity for a summer spent mostly at home. As we embark on the new school year and continue to shelter in place, it’s the perfect time to celebrate International Literacy Day, on September 8th, by supporting our local bookstores!

Copperfield’s Books, on Grant Avenue, is a great place to find all the latest best sellers as well as fiction and nonfiction for folks of all ages. How about gifting a copy of your favorite book to a friend? Or picking up that new novel everyone’s been talking about? You can call or email Copperfield’s with any book request, and if they don’t have it, they’ll be happy to order it for you! So before you shop at an all-online retailer, know that this local bookstore has you covered — open for inside service or curbside pickup every day from 10am-5pm.

Choose from a wonderful selection of used books at The Book Place on Grant Avenue. Operated by Friends of the Marin County Free Library, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making our library system and its programs the best they can be, The Book Place is volunteer-run and “encourage literacy” is part of its mission statement! Plus, with books from every category — fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, children’s books, collector’s items and a variety of audiobooks too — you’re bound to find something you’ll enjoy while also supporting a great cause. The Book Place is currently open for indoor shopping or curbside pickup Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, 10am-2pm. You can request a book via email or phone message too!

Just down the street, you’ll find the unique children’s toy store Five Little Monkeys Toys & Gifts. This community gem has books for kids of all ages — from cloth baby books to chapter books — so you’re sure to find something special for your favorite little person. One of the most important parts of International Literacy Day is the promotion and celebration of helping all children learn to read and write. We’re so lucky to have Five Little Monkeys Toys & Gifts right here in our local community.

Whether you’re sharing the joy of reading with the children in your life or stocking up on books for your personal collection, we hope you’ll think local on International Literacy Day!
